Civilian Response to Military Coup in Myanmar
On 1st February 2021, the military seized power in a coup under a state of emergency set to last for one-year detaining Myanmar’s de facto leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the President, and other democratically elected leaders. Television and radio channels stopped broadcasting and all the telecom companies cut telephone lines and internet connection.
In response, the Burmese citizens protested against the military coup by banging pots at 8:00 pm starting from 2nd February 2021 to now. The banging of cooking pots is traditionally believed to ward off evil spirits by the people of Myanmar. The banging of cooking pots has now become a symbol of opposition to the military dictatorship.
The civil disobedience campaign which was initiated by the medical workers is now gathering support from the government staff in different ministries whose intention is to cease the administrative machine.
At present, our Aware24 Myanmar office remains operational despite the military coup and is providing assistance services by phone rather than by email as internet access is not guaranteed 24/7. Our colleagues in Aware24 Laos office have momentarily taken over the monitoring of our emails to ensure service continuity.
